Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Pierce is a behavioral epidemiologist who works in the areas of cancer prevention and control. He has had a long standing research interest in measurement of health behavior and in interventions to assist people to make and maintain behavior changes. He is well known for his surveillance studies on tobacco use particularly related to the California Tobacco Control Program. Currently, he is conducting major randomized controlled trials (1) on the effectiveness of a plant-based dietary pattern in reducing cancer progression among breast cancer survivors and (2) on whether training a random sample of parents in effective parenting techniques can reduce the incidence of problem behaviors as young people pass through adolescence.
