Expertise and Research InterestsMy research interests center around the interactive effects of exercise and estrogen replacement on the cardiovascular systems of postmenopausal women. Recent results have led me to hypothesize that oxygen transport and uptake kinetics may be different in exercise-trained women between 3 and 10 years past menopause depending on whether or not they take estrogen replacement. Specifically, cardiac output at peak exercise seems to be greater in trained women taking estrogen versus those not taking estrogen. I believe that this may be due to a larger peak stroke volume facilitated by a reduced peripheral resistance; however, this hypothesis has yet to be substantiated.
