Expertise and Research Interests

Through research, I am committed to servicing women who suffer from mood and anxiety disorders. My specific interests have included sex differences in these conditions as well as the relationship and treatment of mood and anxiety disorder occurring during the premenstrual phase of the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy and parturition. My research foci are several and include determining the efficacy and effectiveness of pharmacological treatments of perinatal mood disorders and PMDD, determine the degree of health care utilization among women with PMDD and perinatal depression and investigating the impact of perinatal depressive, anxiety and substance use disorders on birth outcomes.

Other Expertise

I have expertise in the administration of structured short term psychotherapies including interpersonal psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. I also have expertise in consult liason psychiatry.

Fellowship, McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Neurosciences, 1992

Future Research

I hope information gathered on mood disorders in women will influence and guide clinicians in determining the optimal interventions for their female patients. I also hope that the information gathered can be helpful to educate consumers about mood disorders such as depression during pregnancy, postpartum depression and severe premenstrual syndrome so that they can partner with their clinicians and obtain the best possible health care.

Industrial Relevance

I collaborate with other researchers, community clinics, and the hospitals in the greater New Haven and Fairfield Counties, in an effort to increase understanding of women's psychiatric health issues. The goal is to contribute to both the scientific and local communities by conducting research that has clear, pratical applications for women.
