Academic Interests:

A major issue in Dr. Konrad's work has been study of health professionals with a special interest in those who choose to serve vulnerable population groups including their selection, training, deployment, and support. He currently directs the WIN A STEP UP program which promotes career development for frontline direct care workers in long term care settings in North Carolina. As co-director of the National Evaluation Office for the Jobs to Careers Program (Sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), he helps assess the effectiveness of a health workforce development programs that link health care employers and community colleges in developing work based learning for frontline health care workers.

As Director of the Program on Primary Care and the Health Professions at the Cecil G. Sheps Center at UNC-CH, Dr. Konrad conducted the most recent Congressionally mandated, HRSA-sponsored evaluation of the National Health Service Corps and has worked on HRSA-sponsored projects establishing methodologies for shortage area designation for the primary care, dental, and mental health workforces. Dr. Konrad has also conducted and supported research studies of various programs designed to recruit, educate, support, and retain physicians in medically underserved communities with sponsorship from AHRQ, HRSA, and RWJF. He also helped develop the Physician Worklife Study, an ongoing multi-site, multi-disciplinary collaboration that examines the impact of the changing health care system on physician job satisfaction, mental and physical health.

Dr. Konrad currently serves as an evaluation consultant on a HRSA sponsored project to develop and field test a curriculum focused on geriatric interdisciplinary team training at Duke University. He currently serves on the core faculty of the NRSA Health Services Research pre-and post-doctoral training program at the Sheps Center and has served on the faculty of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at UNC. He holds appointments as Research Professor in the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Pharmacy.
