Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Andrea LaCroix has expertise in epidemiologic methods; large randomized controlled clinical trials; osteoporosis and fracture; women's health; aging; and cardiovascular disease. Dr. LaCroix is Co-Principal Investigator of the Women's Health Initiative Clinical Coordinating Center at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center; Scientific Investigator at the Center for Health Studies, Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound; and Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Her research focuses on prevention of osteoporosis and fracture in women of all ages, as well as prevention of coronary disease and cancer. She has published widely on these topics with an emphasis on identifying effective pharmacologic and lifestyle interventions for healthy aging among women.

In the past year, Dr. LaCroix published the results of a three-year randomized controlled trial started in 1993 showing that low dose hydrochlorothiazide preserved bone density at the hip and spine in older adults. She also presented the results of an analysis from the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study, a prospective cohort study of 93,724 women, showing that women who took statin medications for lipid lowering had similar rates of hip, lower arm/wrist and other clinical fractures as women who did not take statin medications. These findings contrast with earlier studies showing a benefit of statins on risk of hip fracture. Dr. LaCroix and her colleagues have developed and tested a workbook designed to assist women with making informed decisions about whether or not to take hormone replacement therapy. Evaluation of the workbook with a randomized controlled trial showed significant improvements in knowledge about HRT among women who received the workbook. This document will be published in the spring 2001 catalogue of the US Government Printing Office and will also be disseminated through a website under development by the Centers for Disease Control. Dr. LaCroix is collaborating as the senior investigator on a new randomized trial testing the effects of selected herbal remedies on vasomotor symptoms, cardiovascular risk factors and bone density in symptomatic perimenopausal women.
