Qualifications

Ph.D., University of Michigan, Environmental Health Sciences, 1981.
M.P.H., University of Michigan, Public Health, 1972.
M.S., University of Florida, Microbiology, 1971.
B.A., Stetson University, Chemistry, 1969.

Expertise and Research Interests

My primary area of research is the mechanism(s) of toxicity of polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons. Members of this class include the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dibenzodioxins, dibenzofurans and various pesticides. My research on these environmental pollutants includes studies of their effects on gene regulation, their metabolism to electrophilic species and their binding to nucleophiles, including amino acids, nucleotides and DNA. My recent research has demonstrated that, during the metabolism of PHAHs, oxidative events occur which lead to increased oxidative DNA damage.
