B.S., University of Bonn, Chemistry, 1990.

Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Lehmler's primary area of interest is the synthesis of halogenated organic compounds and their utilization for the preparation of novel, nanoscale materials, their use for biomedical applications, and their impact in the environment and for human health. He is particularly interested in the two- and three-dimensional self-assembly of fluorinated surfactants. The unique mesophases formed by fluorinated surfactants make them useful and unique templates for the synthesis of ordered nanoscale ceramics. From a biomedical point of view he is interested in the physicochemical interaction of halogenated compounds with hydrocarbon compounds such as biological lipids and proteins. An understanding of these factors is important to understand the biological effects of a large number of halogenated, persistent organic pollutants (POPs). For example, enantioselective distribution of PCB atropisomers in vivo may be determined by protein binding and/or solubility in cellular fat and lipid storage compartments. Interactions of fluorinated materials with lipid mono- and bilayers may alter their function and cause (adverse) biological effects. Other areas of research are focused on the synthesis of partly fluorinated prodrugs and surfactants for the pulmonary administration of drugs during liquid ventilation.
