Expertise and Research Interests

We are conducting studies of normal ocular motor responses, abnormal ocular motor responses and computer modeling of the ocular motor system. A special interest is ocular motor oscillations, both nystagmus and saccadic, in patients with congenital neurological conditions and acquired neurological conditions. We use the study of pathophysiology to learn how the normal system operates and adapts to dysfunction; computer models are especially helpful here. We are also attempting to identify subclinical eye movement abnormalities that may be diagnostically useful and to suggest therapeutic steps that may help alleviate the ocular motor symptoms and/or improve visual acuity.

We are currently studying the effects of a new surgical procedure, tenotomy, on the waveforms of congenital nystagmus and acquired nystagmus. We developed a nystagmus acuity function that uses eye-movement data to predict the best possible visual acuity for the subject's nystagmus waveform. We have also constructed an ocular motor system model that simulates many normal and abnormal responses to known inputs and several types of nystagmus and saccadic oscillations. This extensive model will be used to test new subsystem models, hypothetical mechanisms for dysfunction, and additional mechanisms involved in congenital and latent nystagmus.
