Expertise and Research Interests

Biodiversity exists in a wide range of agroecosystems and natural plant ecosystems where interspecific interactions between plant species occur and may play an important role in the establishment of yield advantage and the evolution of plant communities. On one hand, recent research interest has focused on mechanisms of interspecific below-ground interactions between plant species, including interspecific competition and facilitation, especially in terms of nitrogen and phosphorus uptake by associated species. The results indicate that the mechanisms of interspecific facilitation of P uptake may involve the mobilization of insoluble P in soil by P-efficient plant species and subsequent benefit to associated P-inefficient species. It has been demonstratedthat different species can sometimes utilize different forms or sources of nutrients, such as organic and inorganic P, and this contributes to the facilitation of P uptake in intercropping systems. Our interests have also focused on the nitrogen economy of legume/non-legume intercropping systems. On the other hand, based on differences in the utilization of different resources in space and time between different species in intercropping systems, we would like to use intercropping to reduce nitrate accumulation in the soil profile and to biomediate soils polluted with heavy metals.

Plant growth modelling, especially for intercropping systems and natural community.
