Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Maragakis has expertise in general infectious diseases, hospital epidemiology, and infection control. Her primary research interest is the epidemiology, prevention and control of antimicrobial-resistant gram negative bacilli. She is particularly interested in transmission of these organisms within and among various healthcare settings. Dr. Maragakis investigated an outbreak of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2003 and linked the outbreak to a type of wound care as the source of transmission. She is currently funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through a career development award (K01) grant entitled "Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infections with Antimicrobial-resistant Gram Negative Bacilli". This project examines the epidemiology and transmission of antimicrobial-resistant Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas among several different healthcare settings including acute tertiary care, community hospital, and long term care institutions. She was recently awarded a R01 grant from the CDC to investigate how clinicians use antimicrobial susceptibility data to make treatment choices for MDR gram negative infections. Dr. Maragakis also has research interests in the prevention of surgical site infections and in the role of new technology and devices in healthcare-associated infections.

Other Expertise

Certifications

2001-2011 Board Certification in Internal Medicine
2004-2007 Medical Licensure, Maryland (#D0061129)
2003-2013 Board Certification in Infectious Diseases

Future Research

Dr. Maragakis recently began work on a new project entitled "Susceptibility Testing, Treatment Choices, and Outcomes of MDR-GNB Infections" This project is funded by a R01 grant from the CDC and will continue through September, 2010. She plans to continue research to define the epidemiology of these emerging pathogens and explore different methods of control and prevention including source control and environmental cleaning. She also plans further investigation into the role of new devices and technology in the transmission of infections in the healthcare setting.
