Expertise and Research Interests

My research program is in the field of engineered Bio-based composites with foci on surface science, manufacturing processes and parameters, mechanical properties, and dimensional stability, durability of engineered biomaterials. I am also interested in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of adhesion in biomaterial systems and in the development of new thermoset adhesives (e.g., improve water resistance for UF, develop fast curing PF, etc.). Microcellular and conventional foaming of bio-based composites through a batch and an extrusion processes are also of strong interest in my research program, with the overall goal of understanding the basic mechanisms of the formation of a gas/polymer single phase solution, bubble formation and growth during the foaming process in order to establish process-cell morphology and property relationships for foamed composites.

Other research interests include: nanocomposites using both inorganic (layered silicate, carbon nanotubes) and cellulose nanocrystal fillers. Isolation of nanocrystal from natural fibers using green solvents.

Other Expertise

Biodegradable polymers
Durability (biological, wheathering, etc.) of materials

Future Research

Nanocellulose
Nanocomposites
Reactive extrusion of bio-based omposites
Co-extrusion of biomaterials
