Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Moye has earned a national reputation in the execution of multinational clinical trials. His involvement in these studies is in-depth, beginning with the design of the experiment and moving forward through the execution of the trial and into its analysis phases. Dr. Moye was the first author of a manuscript providing the design of the SAVE study, which followed 2231 patients for more than three years. During the execution of this study, the endpoint became complex, requiring the development of methodology for its analysis. Dr. Moye developed this methodology, which was published in Statistics in Medicine. This procedure was executed in the final analysis, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. This manuscript then led to an examination of the uniformity of the therapy's efficacy published in the European Heart Journal, on which Dr. Moye was first author. In a study examining the use of echocardiographic criteria to assess the post myocardial infarction morbidity and mortality, an issue of quality control arose unexpectedly, requiring a fresh perspective. Dr. Moye was able to develop the methodology and publish its implication in Controlled Clinical Trials. The results of this methodology were implemented in the final analysis of the experiment which appeared in Circulation. He is currently co-Principal Investigator for a trial which has randomized over 4000 patients from the United States and Canada to be followed for five years. He was an investigator in the Systolic Hypertension in the Elderly Program, a program which randomized over 4500 patients for the treatment of stroke. At the study's end, he produced a manuscript as first author describing the implications of SHEP and presented its findings before the World Health Organization in Chantilly, France, in March 1993.

His research in the mathematics of quality control has generated funding opportunities. In 1991, cardiologists Dr. Craig Pratt, M.D., Dr. John Mahmarian, M.D., and Dr. Moye studied the reproducibility of RVG measures of heart function. This led to a grant by the Schering-Plough Corporation, initiating a multicenter clinical trial which provided funds to the University of Texas School of Public Health Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials for one year, during which time Dr. Moye served as Principal Investigator. Dr. Moye is now a member of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board, which oversees this multicenter trial. In addition, he has accepted an invitation to serve on the Data Safety and Monitoring Committee for an NHLBI sponsored multicenter clinical trial to evaluate stroke prevention modalities for patients with sickle cell anemia.

As another example of this process, Dr. Moye has as a physician treated allergic rhinitis, a prevalent condition in Houston. After joining the faculty here, Dr. Craig Pratt, a cardiologist at Baylor College of Medicine, told Dr. Moye of some putative difficulties with this medicine. The correct use of this medication encompassed epidemiologic and health service organization issues. This led to a collaborative effort to examine the incidence of cardiovascular side effects associated with this product, resulting in a presentation before the Federal Food and Drug association in Washington, D.C., in February 1993, a presentation before the Canadian Health Board in Ottawa, Canada (April, 1993), and a publication in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology .

Dr. Moye is a consistent contributor to research in Health Services. In 1988, Dr. Moye won the Outstanding Scholarly Contribution Award from the Systems Research Foundation, Baden-Baden, West Germany for his research on Decision Theory and the Dual Role of Aspirin in Heart Attacks and Strokes.

Every scientific endeavor holds the opportunity to generate research and manuscripts. Dr. Moye's role as a physician is no exception. For several years Dr. Moye owned a Physician's Organization (i.e. a collection of physicians who, as one unit, agree to share costs and profits of a clinic operation). In the mid 1980s, Houston outpatient clinic began to suffer with the local economic downturn, developing cash flow crises. This was a problem from the health services organization arena. Dr. Moye's observations of this phenomenon and how to use prospective run theory to compute the likelihood of consecutive occurences of poor business periods led to a publication in The Statistician and a presentation to the European Operations Research Group in Scotland, 1987. This work has led to a generalization of his contributions to statistical methodology of sequential occurrences of like outcomes, leading to continued research and manuscript generation.

Dr. Moye was a biostatistician on the CardioRenal Advisory Committee to the Federal Food and Drug Adm
