Expertise and Research Interests

Currently conducting research and providing expertise on postmortem and human performance forensic toxicology. Interests include analytical method development, approaches to interpretive toxicology, effects of alcohol and drugs on skills related to driving, and forensic measurement of blood and breath alcohol. Current projects are centered around methamphetamine which is of growing concern in the state of Washington.

Other areas of interest in include forensic toxicothanatology, the study of theeffects of death and dying on blood and tissue drug concentrations. Collaborative work on the effects of putrefactive changes on drug concentrations is ongoing.

Several collaborative projects with clinical and psychiatric researchers are also in progress, measuring blood drug concentrations and evaluating their utility in the diagnosis and treatment of human poisoning from recreational drug use, and collecting data on a reference population for the interpretation of postmortem toxicology data.

Service work involves analysis of alcohol, drugs and posions in medico-legal cases, and testifying in criminal and civil cases regarding the effects of drugs and alcohol.
