QualificationsPh.D., University of California, Davis, Anatomy/Cell Biology, 1981. Expertise and Research InterestsInflammation injury is being recognized as a key factor in many diseases, including atherosclerosis, neurological disorders, diabetes, and arthritis. My laboratory is focused on two aspects of endothelial dysfunction that occurs during inflammation: a) increased vascular endothelial permeability and b) increased endothelial adhesion for leukocytes, both factors critical in the development of tissue edema and leukocyte extravasation. The specific research projects are:
Regulation of the assembly and disassembly of the the adherens junction complex (i.e., cadherins, catenins).
Role of key signaling molecules, such as Protein kinase C and Rho GTPases in regulation of the barrier function.
Mechanisms by protection against inflammation-induced increases in endothelial permeabiliyt, including cAMP-dependent Protein Kinase.
Molecular events regulating the active leukocyte-endothelial interactions during migration through endothelial cell junctions (tight and adherens junctions).
