Expertise and Research Interests

Research Areas:
Opiate pharmacokinetics/dynamics in pediatric patients, with special reference to infants and to respiratory effects; pediatric cardiovascular agents for preoperative support.

Clinical interests:
Pediatric anesthesia and critical care for congenital heart patients.

Summary of Research:
Because concern of producing respiratory depression in infants when opiate analgesics are used, I have focused much of my research on the handling of morphine in infants. Studies have includedphamacokinetics versus age and respiratory effects (including oximetry, blood gas analysis, and CO2 re-breathing responses) during post-op morphine infusions. I also studied the CSF to plasma ratio of morphine in primates at 3 ages (newborn, 1 month, and 1 year) to assess permeability across the blood- brain barrier. A separate research area of interest is the period support of infants and children with congenital heart disease. Here studies have included amrinone and milrinone, two PDEiii inhibitors. Most recently, we reported the effects of bypass and betadine topical skin prep on thyroid function.
