QualificationsDiplomate, American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, Preventive Medicine and Public Health, 1994. M.P.H., University of Washington, Epidemiology and Public Health, 1989. Ph.D., University of Washington, Infectious Diseases, 1984. D.V.M., 1973. Expertise and Research InterestsEpidemiology of infectious diseases in human and animal populations. Outbreak investigation of infectious diseases with particular emphasis on salmonellosis, campylobacter and E. coli infections. Dr. Saeed has recently led the effort for establishing the emerging infectious disease program at Michigan State University. Developed new courses for the food safety specialty and professional master in food safety at Michigan State University. National Consultant in outbreak investigation with particular emphasis to foodborne diseases. He has been a consultant to the poultry industry on Salmonella Enteritidis. Currently, Dr. Saeed is leading a major research on the evolution of virulence in Salmonella Enteritidis and the risk factors for the emergence of this serotype in Michigan pediatric population. Dr. Saeed is conducting research on molecular epidemiology of salmonellosis in Michigan to address the determinants for the ecological and virulence evolutions that have led to the emergence of several salmonella serotypes and the possible epistatic effect of antimicrobial resistance by addressing the zoonotic link in the epidemiology of the disease in human populations. Additionally, Dr. Saeed is working actively to develop novel approaches to the prophylaxis and therapy of several infectious diseases using innovative egg-yolk derived antibody in collaboration with Michigan-based industry. Other ExpertiseAn expert in the epidemiology of foodborne diseases. Provided expert services to citizens, law firms, and industries on technical and legal aspects of foodborne diseases. Dr. Saeed has been teaching a graduate course in 'Disease Outbreak Investigation" to graduate, professional, and physicians at the Department of Epidemiology, College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University. A designer and instructor of 'Food Safety Epidemiology', a recently developed online course offered to students at Michigan State University, federal employees, and inernational students. Future ResearchDr. Saeed is using innovative molecular epidemiologic approach to deleniate the underlaying causes of virulence evolution in enteric human pathogens. Additionally, he is developing novel prevention and therapy of several infectious diseases using egg yolk-derived antibody as an innovative approah. Further more, his research may help in the design of effective vaccines against enteric disease that are the cause of signifiant morbidities and mortalities worldwide. Industrial RelevanceDr. Saeed's current research is focused on the applied aspects of emerging infectious diseases particularly salmonellosis, E. coli, and Campylobacter infections. virulence evolution in enteric human pathogens. Additionally, he is developing novel prevention and therapy of several infectious diseases using egg yolk-derived antibody as an innovative approah. Further more, his research may help in the design of effective vaccines against enteric disease that are associated with signifiant morbidities and mortalities worldwide. It is hoped that our research will lead to the identification of new designs for better detection methods, prediction of emerging infections, vaccines development, and enhanced strategies for the prevention of infectious diseases.
