QualificationsPh.D., University of Alberta, Educational Psychology and Special Education, 1985. M.Ed., University of Alberta, Educational Psychology and Special Education, 1981. B.Ed. (Hons), University of Cape Coast, Education, 1977. Expertise and Research InterestsDr. Marfo defines himself as a teacher-researcher. He has, for a number of years now, been engaged in active programmatic research in the following areas: early childhood development, developmental science and public policy; early intervention; parent-child interaction; atypical development; cognition, learning, and instruction; and program evaluation.
Between 2002 and 2007, he served as his university's faculty liaison for early learning/school readiness initiatives in a 9-county region of Southwest Florida, and was the Principal Investigator on a three-year School Readiness/Early Learning University-Community Partnership project to develop tools and strategies for early care settings.
His earliest international work focused largely on problems in the transfer of knowledge and expertise from Western to non-Western contexts. Between 1981 and 1994, he edited three volumes on childhood disability in developing countries (the Majority World) drawing on the expertise of contributors with close experience in Majority World contexts. His most recent scholarship on the Majority World focuses on (1) enhancing child development research in Africa and (2) capacity building for early childhood development (ECD) in Africa -- done in collaboration with a number of international colleagues, including Dr. Alan R. Pence, Founder and Director of the Early Childhood Development Virtual University initiative at the University of Victoria, Canada. In 2008-2009, he served as co-leader, with his colleague Alan Pence, of an invitational conference, sponsored by the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), on the subject of strengthening Africa's contributions to child development research.
He has undertaken international comparative research on early child development (ECD) policy environments, and has received funding from the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC, for his analysis of ECD policy environments in Canada and the U.S. Since 2005, Dr. Marfo has been part of a China Adoption Research Program directed by Dr. Tony Tan.
Major journals in which Dr. Marfo has published include the following: Alberta Journal of Educational Research; Applied Research in Mental Retardation; Developmental Disabilities Bulletin; Early Education and Development; Educational Psychology; Educational & Psychological Measurement; Infant and Child Development; International Journal of Cognitive Education and Mediated Learning; International Journal of Disability, Development, and Education; International Journal of Educational Policy, Research, and Practice; International Journal of Psychology, Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology; Journal of Child Psychology & Psychiatry; Journal of Pediatric Psychology; Psychological Assessment; and Review of Educational Research.
Dr. Marfo's scholarly works have been cited more than 320 times in at least 130 different professional journals worldwide, and in over 50 textbooks and reference volumes. Other ExpertiseDr. Marfo engages in extensive conceptual and theoretical analysis of developmental and contextual issues with significant implications for early childhood intervention programs and social policy. Over the past few years, he has given keynote addresses and other invited speeches at major conferences in Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and the United States. Dr. Marfo has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Early Intervention (Associate Editor, 1991-1994), the Developmental Disabilities Bulletin (Canada), Early Childhood Research Quarterly, NHSA Dialog, and the International Journal of Educational Policy, Research and Practice. He has been a member of the Standing Review Panel of the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP, U.S. Department of Education) for a number of years. In July 2008, he completed 5 years of service on the Biobehavioral and Behavioral Sciences Subcommittee of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Future ResearchAfter nearly 30 years of research contributions in North America (Canada and the United States), Dr. Marfo is devoting some of his time and energy to (1) the support of capacity-building activities aimed at enhancing research expertise in African universities and (2) the development of programmatic developmental research on the continent.
