Expertise and Research Interests

Behavioral neuroscience of substance use disorders and treatment:
- Pharmacological and environmental determinants of drug seeking behavior, using choice progressive ratio procedures and behavioral economic analysis
- Investigation of brain function using PET, MR Spectroscopy, Functional MRI, and EEG in substance abusers
- Role of the endogenous opioid system, especially mu-receptors, in mediating the reinforcing and dependence-producing effects of opioids and other drugs, and in promoting the clinical efficacy of pharmacotherapy (e.g., preventing drug self-administration and withdrawal signs/symptoms)
- Development of human laboratory procedures for evaluating new analgesics and medications for treating substance use and co-occurring disorders

Factors related to vulnerability to substance abuse and relapse:
- Individual differences related to the etiology and course of substance use disorders (e.g., initiation of drug-taking and treatment outcome), including genetic polymorphisms
- Biobehavioral markers (e.g., motor activity, risk-taking, impulsivity, and aggressiveness)
