QualificationsM.P.H., University of Michigan, Public Health Policy and Administration, 1993. Ph.D., Western Michigan University, Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1980. M.A., Western Michigan University, Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 1978. B.A., Spring Arbor University, Psychology, 1976. Expertise and Research InterestsA Fulbright senior research scholar to Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) in 1990-1991 and to Uganda and Kenya (2003-2004), as well as a West African Research Association (WARA) Fellow to Senegal in 1997, Dr. Boivin is presently serving a three-year terms with the peer review committed for the Fulbright Senior Scholar program for East Africa. He is also currently an Adjunct Research Investigator with the Neuropsychology Program at the University of Michigan, and in addition to his doctoral work in the experimental analysis of behavior; he has an MPH from the University of Michigan in Public Health Policy and Administration. At Michigan, Dr. Michael Boivin has published studies pertaining to neurodegenerative disease, brain imaging, and neuropsychology. More recently, however, his focus has been on health factors influencing the neuropsychological and cognitive ability development of children in a variety of international settings, especially severe malaria and HIV in sub-Sahara Africa.
In the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University, he is presently the PI on a three-year study entitled "Breast cancer disease and treatment: modeling the relationships among spiritual and emotional well-being, quality of life, neuropsychological function, and immunological resilience." The study is funded by a Templeton Advanced Research Program Area 1 grant administered through the Metanexus Institute.
Other On-going Research: PI on a five-year study entitled "Pathogenesis of cognitive/neurologic deficits in central nervous system malaria (Uganda)". RO1NS055349-01A2 (John) 5/01/2008-4/30/2013. This study investigates the association of immunologic factors with neurocognitive sequelae in Ugandan children with severe malaria.
PI on a three-year study entitled "Cognitive and psychosocial benefits of caregiver training in Ugandan HIV children." R34MH082663-01A1 (Boivin) 4/01/2008-3/30/2011 The study evaluates the neurocognitive and psychosocial benefits of a one-year training program for the caregivers of HIV children and orphans.
PI on a two-year study entitled "Determinants of neurodevelopmental delay in Ugandan HIV children." R21MH083166-01A1 (Wong) 5/01/2008-4/30/2010 This study will evaluate the impact of malarial illness on the neurocognitive and motor development of both HIV and non-HIV Ugandan children.
Co-PI on a University of Michigan Global Health Institute study entitled "Neuropsychological, Cognitive, and Academic Benefits of a Computerized Cognitive Rehabilitation Training Intervention for HIV-infected Ugandan School Children." This is a pilot study on implementing a eight-week computerized cognitive rehabilitation training with Ugandan HIV school children. We are evaluating the impact of such training on neuropsychological performance.
CO-PI on a University of Michigan Global Health Research and Training Award (Giordani). The study is entitled "Neuropsychological Impact of a Computerized Cognitive Rehabilitation Training Intervention with Ugandan Cerebral Malaria Survivors." This is a pilot study on implementing a eight-week computerized cognitive rehabilitation training with Ugandan school children who have survived cerebral malaria.
PI on a Michigan State University VPRGS Office grant. Study is entitled "Cognitive and psychosocial effects of true cerebral malaria in Malawian children." This is a preliminary study of the neurocognitive and psychosocial effects of true cerebral malaria in Malawian children. True cerebral malaria is defined by children with malarial specific retinopathy during acute illness.
Consultant on a NIH/Fogarty IRSDA Award (5K01TW007403 -Brahmbhat) Morbidity/Mortality and Disability in Children (MADIC) study. The study will provide comprehensive information on child physical development, morbidity, and mortality, as well as unique data on neurodevelopmental disabilities, in Rakai Uganda. Other ExpertiseAssessment of spiritual well-being, emotional well-being, and quality of life. Experimental analysis of behavior in the animal laboratory. Future ResearchNeuropsychology of severe malaria in African children. Neuropsychology of HIV in African children. Neuropsychological validation of computerized cognitive rehabilitation interventions for brain-injured children in the resource-poor African setting. Spiritual, emotional, and cognitive effects of breast cancer and its treatment. Industrial RelevanceAssessing the impact of public health interventions on neuropsychological outcomes in children adds an entirely new domain to the cost/benefit analysis of such interventions, that is often overlooked. Our evaluation of the relationship between neuropsychological sequelae and immuno-reactive pathogenic processes in cerebral malaria in African children may ultimately lead to new types of combination therapies during the acute phase of this disease. Our work in sustainable interventions to enhance quality of caregiving for children affected by HIV disease may help buffer the effects of the disease and improve their overall quality of life. We are also pioneering the use of computer-based cognitive rehabilitation program in resource-poor settings in Africa for children suffering from cognitive impairment in the aftermath of infectious disease affecting the CNS (e.g., malaria, meninigitus, HIV. Our evaluation of the spiritual, emotional, neuropsychological, and immunological effects of breast cancer treatment can provide support for holistic interventions in the treatment of this disease.
