Expertise and Research Interests

My goal is to understand how nutrition impacts the growth and function of mammary tissue. A better understanding of mammary development will be used to increase the efficiency with which ruminants produce protein for human consumption. This work also has potential to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in humans.

Specific objectives are:
1. To determine the effects of energy and protein nutrition of dairy heifers on mammary development
2. To determine effects of leptin and insulin-like growth factor-I on mammary cell proliferation using in vitro and in vivo models and to determine if these regulators mediate effects of nutrition on the mammary gland
3. To identify the major intracellular pathways mediating leptin and IGF-I signaling in mammary tissue
4. To identify the growth rate and breeding size of dairy heifers that optimize subsequent milk production
5. To develop mathematical models of animal nutrition and nutritional efficiency that can be used practically in animal agriculture
6. To determine the effect of diet on the expression of metabolic genes in liver, muscle, and mammary tissues

Industrial Relevance

The raising of dairy heifers accounts for about 20% of the costs involved in dairy farming. How dairy heifers are raised can significantly alter the cost and can have a significant effect on the animals productivity once it becomes a lactating cow. Thus, improved methods to cost effectively raise dairy heifers can have a major impact on dairy farm profitability.
