QualificationsPh.D., University of Bonn, Nutrition Sciences, 2001. M.Sc., University of Bonn, Nutrition Sciences, 1996. Expertise and Research InterestsI am interested in the molecular and metabolic relationship of dietary and genetic factors to obesity and to the development of diseases that are associated with excess body fat mass such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer.
Currently ongoing studies investigate the effect of the fatty acid and carbohydrate composition of the diet on different aspects of energy balance. In one recently completed study, we investigated the effect of dietary n-3-fatty acids on adipose tissue expression and plasma concentration of hormones involved in regulating energy balance and body weight. In another, currently ongoing pilot study, we are comparing the effect of different sugars on plasma concentrations of adiposity hormones and satiety signals as well as the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD)-response of brain areas involved in food reward and energy homeostasis regulation using functional magnetic resonance imaging.
Another current project involves studying adipose tissue macrophage infiltration and inflammation, and the factors that regulate these processes. We are currently establishing the methods to characterize the phenotype of macrophages in adipose tissue, as well as to collect different cell types in adipose tissue for subsequent separate analyses. The longer-term goal of this line of research will be to perform lifestyle intervention studies to identify modifiable factors that affect the infiltration of adipose tissue with macrophages as well as their activation.
