His research aims to understand the impact that microbes have on the fate of nutritive and toxic metals in natural waters. Twiss' area of expertise is the Laurentian Great Lakes ecosystem. Research is conducted in the field on research vessels and in laboratory using organisms isolated from the Great Lakes. This research is at the interface between microbial plankton ecology and analytical chemistry. His research has been awarded the Chandler-Misener award by the International Association for Great Lakes Research.
