QualificationsPh.D., University of Colorado at Boulder, Sociology, 2002. B.S., Drexel University, International Area Studies, 1992. Expertise and Research InterestsI am a sociologist of social problems, whose interests lie in the study of three substantive areas: 1. School shootings. Major projects include: a. Crisis management at school shootings, a project in collaboration with research team based at Universitie du Quebec au Montreal. b. "The Lessons of Columbine," double special issue of the American Behavioral Scientist, co-edited with J. William Spencer, Purdue University. (Not in print). c. "The Columbine Effect," edited volume, co-edited with Stuart Henry, Anthony Peguero, and Nicole Bracy. 2. Surveillance Technologies used in techniques of social control. Current projects include: a. Silver Alerts project - use of media alerts to locate missing adults with dementia or other cognitive impairments. b. Propaganda project - centering on the market censorship of mass media, particularly in the Italian context. 3. News media coverage of high profile crimes and social problems. My research on the media coverage of high profile crimes contributes to the sociological literatures concerning social problems, the discourse of fear, and the social construction of crime and deviance. Currently, I am involved in studies examining the following media events: a. Rampage school shooting incidents, such as Columbine. b. Techniques for locating missing persons, including AMBER Alert Plans and Silver Alert Plans. c. Death row volunteers - i.e., death row convicts who voluntarily stop legal appeals, thereby hastening their own executions. These cases are a subset of those executed in capital punishment cases in the US. d. Worker displacement, including layoffs, downsizing, and outsourcing.
