Expertise and Research Interests

Nair's laboratory, the Bioactive Natural Products and Phytoceuticals Laboratory at Michigan State University, is engaged in the discovery, isolation, and identification of phytoceuticals that are potential candidates to be evaluated as phytomedicines. The diseases include cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), musculoskeletal disease, mental health problems, type-2 diabetes, obesity, inflammation and parasitic/microbial diseases. BNPP addresses aspects of product discovery including efficacy, toxicity, mode of action and dosage of identified phytochemical(s) and facilitate commercialization of such products as phytomedicines. The phytochemicals of interest are also being evaluated for animal and plant health. Therefore, our research involves bioassay-directed discovery, purification and chemical characterization of natural products from plants and microbes using preliminary anticancer, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, nematicidal, mosquitocidal and insecticidal assays. Another component of this research focuses on phytoceuticals with biological activities to enhance food safety and add value to fresh and processed foods.

Our research on phytoceuticals includes (1) determination of structure and structure activity relationships of natural products in plant parts that have potential to be developed as alternative medicines (2) determining efficacy, toxicity and dosage of ingredients in supplements or potential natural products to be developed as botanical drugs and (3) evaluation of phytoceutical components to enhance food safety.

Other Expertise

Editorial Board Member of Phytomedicine, Editorial Board Advisory of Pesticide Research Journal, Reviewer for a number of scientific journals, reviewer for national, state, university and international granting agencies, public-private technology transfer to market place.
- President and Director of Research, Natural Products Technologies, Inc., 1990-2004; President & CEO, VAMTech, LLC., 1996-2004; Chief Technology Officer, Natural Therapeutics LLC, 2004-

Future Research

Establish a Botanical Research Center at Michigan State University to identify phytomedicines present in generally regarded as safe (GRAS) plants grown in Michigan and the USA in conjunction with scientists at Michigan State University to treat or prevent diseases that afflict the elderly. These diseases include cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as AlzheimerĂ,Â's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), musculoskeletal disease, mental health problems, type-2 diabetes, obesity, inflammation and parasitic/microbial diseases. The Center will address all aspects of product discovery including efficacy, toxicity, mode of action and dosage of identified phytochemical(s) and facilitate commercialization of such products asphytomedicines.

Industrial Relevance

The U.S. market potential for phytoceuticals is expected to reach $60 billion by the year 2010. About 60 million potential new customers for phytoceuticals are in the USA. Children at health risk in the USA or faced with long-term health problems are 2 million with high blood pressure, 27 million with high cholesterol, and 12.5 million with obesity. It is important to note that the food and natural healthcare industries currently market phytoceuticals but not phytomedicines. Nair's laboratory has recently developed natural products for clinical studies on the prevention/treatment of inflammation, colon cancer, fungal/bacterial disease, and parasitic diseases such as schistosomiasis.
