Expertise and Research Interests

I have used mineral chemistry as a tool to understand the role of hydrothermal fluid circulation in two important mineralizing environments in Canada: the Sudbury structure (ON), and the Ferguson Lake deposit (NU), both of which are important sources for Ni, Cu, and platinum group elements. I have also worked with industry geologists for a research project on Geochemical and Mineralogical Halos around Magmatic Sulfide Deposits. My experience also includes the study of black shales using whole rock geochemistry, in order to understand their tectonic environment of deposition and its potential relationship with Colombian type emerald mineralization. In addition, I have also worked for the oil industry in various projects in the upper Magdalena Valley (Colombia) and the Maracaibo Basin (Venezuela), involving petrography, clay mineralogy and fluid inclusions studies

Other Expertise

Previous fields of expertice encompass diverse aspects of Geochemistry and Economic Geology such as: geochemistry of black shales and clastic sedimentary suites directed towards understanding their relation with provenance and tectonic setting at the time of deposition, the genesis of the black shale hosted Colombian-type emerald mineralization, clay mineralogy and illite crystallinity as indicator of diagenesis and low-grade metamorphism, characterization of mineralizing fluids in hydrothermal veins and quartz overgrowth associated with diagenetic processes and Geothermal geology and fluid geochemistry directed at investigating, assessing and utilizing geothermal resources.

Future Research

Use trace and isotopic geochemistry of minerals and fluid inclusions in combination with field mapping and petrography to study:

Hydrothermal alteration and water-rock interaction in fossil hydrothermal systems and their relation to ore forming processes.

The Magmatic-Hydrothermal transition.

The role of hydrothermal fluid flow around massive sulphide mineralization and the consequences for mineralization, alteration, and geochemical dispersion.

Characterization of mineralogical and chemical halos as tools for deciphering mineral occurrences.

Genesis of ores and ore deposit exploration, specially exploration of Ni-Cu-PGE deposits and understanding of the role of hydrothermal fluids in the modification (redistribution and concentration) of Ni-Cu-PGE ores.

Industrial Relevance

July 31 to August 26: Field work, core logging and core sampling activities at the Ferguson Lake Field Camp, Nunavut (Canada). Starfield Resources Inc.

October 2003 to July 2004: M.Sc. Geologist for the company LITHoil Ltda in diverse projects in the upper Magdalena Valley (Colombia) and the Maracaibo Basin (Venezuela). My contract focused in diverse aspects including: Optical microscopy for mineral identification, textural characterization, modal classification, grain size and porosity determinations, and evaluation diagenetic models; XRD studies for qualitative and quantitative determination of clay mineralogy directed at evaluating the digenetic evolution and understanding the reservoir quality for enhanced recovery; and implementation of the methilene blue test for detection of swelling clays in drilling cuttings.

May-June 2003: Consulting geologist for LITHoil Ltda, for a project for HGA Ltda. Identification and analyses of clay minerals by XRD. Responsibilities: identification of clay minerals based on X-ray diffraction and semi-quantitative analyses of expandable clays focused on the evaluation of drilling problems.

June-July 2001: Geologist specialist in fluid inclusions. A Fluid Inclusions Study of Quartz Overgrowths, Calcite and Quartz Veins with Digenetic implications. For a project for ECOPETROL-ICP.

July- October 1999: Geologist. SPC Ltda Barrancabermeja. Geotechnical study of Barrancabermeja Santander.
