Qualifications

Chartered Health Psychologist, British Psychological Society, 2004.
Ph.D., University of Liverpool, Psychology, 1992.
B.A., University of Liverpool, Psychology, 1984.

Expertise and Research Interests

I am Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry at GKT Dental Institute. I lead the Oral Health, Workforce and Education Research theme at King's College London, a group which is involved in cutting edge research in the behavioural sciences as applied to dentistry, oral health services research and the development of new technologies in dental education. I have worked in the behavioural sciences in relation to dentistry since 1992, and my particular interests include self-perceived oral health and quality of life, the working life of the dental team and patients' perceptions of treatment. I have published articles and books on stress and the dental profession, workforce planning in dentistry, and patients' perceptions of the process and outcome of treatment. In 2007 I received the Giddon Award for distinguished research in the behavioural sciences. In conjunction with Drs Koula Asimakopoulou, Sasha Scambler and Suzanne Scott, I founded the King's College London Dental Institute Health Psychology Service for people with dental anxiety and fear. This service provides a range of interventions to support individuals with severe dental fear. The service is underpinned by research and provides a range of services. I am currently working with colleagues at the Institute of Psychiatry, and the University of Washington to develop and evaluate computerised cognitive behaviour therapies for individuals with dental fear.

Outside the dental field I am interested in research into individuals with severe mental retardation and those with eating disorders. I was Chair of Trustees of a National Charity for Eating Disorders in the United Kingdom.

Research

I am author and c-author of over 150 peer reviewed academic articles, three books, as well as contributing to more than 20 book chapters. I have presented at numerous international conferences and have over 300 published abstracts and other published outputs. In conjunction with colleagues I have secured approximately £(UK) 2 million of peer reviewed grant funding.

Teaching

Social and Behavioural Sciences as Applied to Dentistry

I was appointed to the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' (UMDS) as Lecturer in Psychology in relation to Dentistry with the remit to provide teaching in psychology for students of dentistry. Since that time I have both provided and managed the delivery of comprehensive teaching in the social and behavioural sciences (including psychology, sociology and health economics) for both undergraduate and postgraduate dental students. As part of this I highlighted the need for formal teaching of communication skills for dental students, and have designed and implemented a course in this subject. This course has received attention from a number of international dental schools and I have been asked to advise teachers in dental schools in Spain, Canada, Italy, and the United Kingdom on the design of courses similar to that I created for King's College London.

Research Methods

I have developed a modular research methods course which is delivered both in traditional face-toface formats and via distance learning.

Service

In conjunction with Drs Koula Asimakopoulou, Scambler and Scott I founded the King's College London Dental Institute Health Psychology Service for people with dental anxiety and fear. This service provides a range of help for people with dental fear as well as exploring ways in which the provision of information and the structure of healthcare environments can help to improve patients' experience of dental treatment. The service is evidence based and research led. As part of this service I am involved in the development of computerised cognitive behaviour therapy for individuals with dental fear.

Administrative Roles

My key administrative roles demonstrate my ongoing commitment to ensuring the facilitation of research across healthcare settings. I am Deputy Director of Research & Development for the King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. I took up this post in November 2007 and since that time I have focussed on three core activities within the Trust: Ensuring governance procedures are in place within the Trust for the conduct of research, including streamlining mechanisms for researchers to gain appropriate approvals; Building NHS research within the Trust, including securing funding mechanisms for research within the Trust and building research capacity; Developing academic partnerships to support research.

I lead the Oral Health, Workforce & Education research group of King's College London. The group undertakes research in four programmes, each of which is founded upon two core research elements that are under constant development within the group.

These core components are:

Methodological expertise. The group has expertise in a wide range of research methods, both quantitative and qualitative (but alas not laboratory methods), with particular focii on the development of outcome measures to assess patients' and users experience of interventions, and techniques for measuring the impact of new technologies on education and training. Members of the group employ a range of methodological approaches in their research, including epidemiological methods, observational studies, questionnaire survey methods, and analogue experimental studies to investigate the impact of health service reform. The expertise within the group is unparalleled within a dental school setting, and you will hear later of the lead provided by the group in the application of statistical modelling and qualitative methods in dental research.

Educational theory. The group also draws upon expertise in educational theory as a basis for the development and evaluation of new technologies in teaching and learning, and the development of health promoting interventions.

The five key research areas for the group are:

* Social epidemiology (Lead: Dr Blanaid Daly & Professor Tim Newton)
* The evaluation of oral and other dental health services (Lead: Professor Tim Newton)
* Career and professional development of the dental team (Lead: Dr Jenny Gallagher & Professor Tim Newton)
* New technologies in learning and teaching in dentistry (Lead: Professor Margaret Cox & Professor Pat Reynolds)
* Epidemiology of oral cancer and pre-cancer (Lead: Professor Saman Warnekulasuriya)

I am Chair of the Biomedical Health Sciences & Physical Science & Engineering Research Ethics Subcommittee of King's College London and a former member of the Social Science and Public Policy Research Ethics Subcommittee. I am also the Chair of the Subject Approval Board for Postgraduate (Research) degrees. I also sit on the Dental Institute Research Committee which sets research strategy for the King's College London Dental Institute.
