Expertise and Research Interests

My research involves the application of molecular methodologies to systematic and evolutionary questions in a variety of taxonomic groups of plants, particularly parasitic angiosperms. My lab and collaborators use nucleotide sequence data, derived from the nuclear, chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes, to address these questions. The following represent some of the recent and ongoing projects we have been involved with:

- Molecular phylogeny and biogeography of Loranthaceae (mistletoes, Santalales)
- Molecular phylogeny of the sandalwood order (Santalales)
- Molecular phylogenies of 'nonasterid' holoparasites (Balanophoraceae, Hydnoraceae, Rafflesiaceae and segregates of these families)
- Molecular evolution of the chloroplast genome in nonasterid holoparasites
- Populational studies of various plants using isozymes, RAPDs, etc.

Other Expertise

I maintain a number of web sites that convey information to the scientific community, students, and the general public. One of these, the Parasitic Plant Connection, is the primary hub of information on these plants. Through this site, I receive communications from individuals interested in these plants from countries worldwide.
