Expertise and Research Interests

I am participating in a project whose principle goal is to demonstrate a community-based model for the collection and application of environmental health assessment data utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. The goals of this researchare: 1) To increase access of GIS technology to the Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) and participating community-based organizations, and to provide training for identified personnel. 2) To identify communities within Flint at high-risk for lead and toxic metals exposure, and to evaluate relative contributions of the various pathways to total exposure in the high-risk groups. Lead and toxic metal distribution maps and industry locations will be produced and combined with census tract databases to show how the sources and levelsof toxic metals are related to relevant community characteristics. 3) To increase the capacity of the GCHD and participating community-based organizations to use GIS data to support public health interventions and advocacy. Interviews will be conducted for determining the extent to which lead exposure data generated by the project is used to develop or enhance interventions and to support advocacy work in the community. 4) To expand the knowledge and skills of students in the area of community-based approaches to local health problems as evaluated jointly by the partners in the project and through the students' self-evaluation of their work experience.
