Qualifications

Ph.D., University of Wisconsin, Exercise Psychology, 1989.
M.S., Purdue University, Exercise Science, 1985.
B.S., University of Oregon, Political Science, 1981.

Expertise and Research Interests

In general, my research has investigated psychobiological and mental health outcomes of acute and chronic physical activity. One specific interest is the influence of exercise on moods such as anger, anxiety, energy, and depression. A second specific interest is in better understanding exercise-related muscle pain - we are currently using the R-III nociceptive reflex as a tool to better understand delayed-onset muscle pain. A third specific interest is in the relationship between physical activity and the human circadian system, including sleep. A fourth interest is the relationship between physical activity and the physical and mental health of very young female gymansts.
