QualificationsPh.D., University of California, San Diego, Anthropology, 1981. M.A., University of California, San Diego, Anthropology, 1975. B.A., University of Chicago, Anthropology, 1974. Expertise and Research InterestsA medical anthropologist, my primary areas of expertise lie within the fields of behavioral medicine with a focus on psychiatric epidemiology and psychoneuroendocrinology, and in cross-cultural medicine with a focus on cultural epidemiology, ethnopsychiatry, and health services research. I am particularly interested in the sociocultural and environmental determinants of health and health-related behavior with a focus on disease prevention and health promotion. My current research includes an examination of social, psychological and environmental influences on health and health-related behavior in circumpolar regions (Arctic and Antarctic) and other extreme environments (long-duration space missions), effect of environment-induced changes in mood and cognitive performance, dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices in mental health services, Latino health status and health services utilization, U.S.-Mexico border health issues, immigrant and refugee health, and community-oriented primary care and prevention. Other ExpertiseIn addition to the use of quantitative, epidemiologic methods, I have considerable experience in the use of qualitative, ethnographic methods in community-based and health services research.
