Expertise and Research Interests

A medical anthropologist, my primary areas of expertise lie within the fields of behavioral medicine with a focus on psychiatric epidemiology and psychoneuroendocrinology, and in cross-cultural medicine with a focus on cultural epidemiology, ethnopsychiatry, and health services research. I am particularly interested in the sociocultural and environmental determinants of health and health-related behavior with a focus on disease prevention and health promotion. My current research includes an examination of social, psychological and environmental influences on health and health-related behavior in circumpolar regions (Arctic and Antarctic) and other extreme environments (long-duration space missions), effect of environment-induced changes in mood and cognitive performance, dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices in mental health services, Latino health status and health services utilization, U.S.-Mexico border health issues, immigrant and refugee health, and community-based participatory research.

Other Expertise

In addition to the use of quantitative, epidemiologic methods, I have considerable experience in the use of qualitative, ethnographic methods in community-based and health services research.
