Qualifications

Ph.D., North Carolina State University, Marine Science, 1980.
M.S., North Carolina State University, Marine Science, 1976.
B.S., Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Biology, 1973.

Expertise and Research Interests

My research is focused on understanding the functioning of microbial communities in natural and contaminated environments, on bioremediation, and on carbon seqeustration.

The major thrust of my basic research program is on microbial heterogeneity and diversity in the subsurface. Applied research focuses on monitoring of in-situ bioremediation, degradation of TCE, genetically engineered bacteria, and U reduction.

The research methods used in my laboratory include monitoring of microbial populations using culture and direct counting methods and monitoring of degradation using radiolabel techniques and standard analytical methods (e.g., gas chromatography).Molecular methods (DNA probes, PCR, microarrays) are being used for monitoring of bacterial diversity, transport and survival. Lux technology, with genetically engineered bioreporter bacteria, is used in a variety of ways.
