Expertise and Research Interests

My current research interests include the following areas:

The epidemiology of cerebral palsy and other neurodevelopmental disorders

Perinatal brain injury and its consequences

New approaches to perinatal research including the archiving of perinatal biological specimens

The epidemiology of infant and fetal mortality

The epidemiology of preterm delivery and low birthweight

The role of health services in lowering infant mortality

Neurodevelopmental outcome in premature and low birthweight infants and other infants with perinatal risk factors

The history of epidemiology

Future Research

My overarching research goal for the forseeable future is to come to a better understanding of the prenatal and perinatal roots of the major disabling neurodevelopmental conditions of childhood, particularly cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy, mental retardation, autism and similar disorders are enormously burdensome to affected individuals, their families and to society, and sadly we have as yet made very little progress in their prevention.
