North Dakota State University Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources Ag Experiment Station - Central Grasslands Research Extension Center Range ScientistAppointed: 1987 | |
QualificationsM.S., University of Idaho, Range Resources, 1985. B.S., Kansas State University, Range Management, 1978. Expertise and Research InterestsRange ecology and grazing effects Range management Conservation Reserve Program research Grazing intensity research Natural resources management Other Expertise- Use of a swardstick to estimate production on range sites - Use of Neural Networks software to determine forage production on grazing intensity study - Develop teaching materials on plant identification to teach summer students - Assist visiting scholars from the Chinese Republic with preparation of papers for publication in the USA Industrial RelevanceApproximately 28% of North Dakota is rangeland. If improved grazing management could enhance production on 10% of this land by just 100 kg/hectare that would result in an extra 50 million kilograms of forage being available to livestock producers in North Dakota. Assuming that a cow consumes 12 kg of forage/day and a 5-month long grazing season, the state could carry over 27,000 more cows. If they produce 230-kilogram calves and they bring $1.50/kilogram when sold that would result in $9.3 million of additional income to the livestock producers of North Dakota.
The primary agricultural product from rangelands is red meat; therefore, while this project does not directly assess the quality of the meat coming from North Dakota rangelands it addresses how to optimize the quantity or economic return and sustainability of production. The profit margin in livestock production in most years is small and small increases in efficiency can often make a big difference in the viability of the operation.
