Expertise and Research Interests

M.Sc. Primary Health Care by web-based distance learning - I undertook a research dissertation using qualitative research methods to explore the patient experience of depression management in primary care. The outcomes of this small study have had a significant impact upon the structure and management of depression services within the practice; they have also led to the identification of the topic for my Ph.D.

Ph.D. Primary Care - a qualitative study using questionnaires and in-depth interviews to explore patients fears and concerns which may arise when the time comes to stop their antidepressant medication.

My areas of particular expertise are the primary care management of: depression; type 2 diabetes; secondary prevention of coronary heart disease.

Future Research

Current research is a qualitative study exploring patients' fears and concerns when the time comes to stop their antidepressant medication. Kleinman's explanatory model theory is the theoretical framework which underpins this study.

The next stage of the study will aim to look at effective clinican intervention(s) to enable a partnership approach to successfully managing depression in primary care.
