QualificationsPostdoctoral Fellowship, University of Pittsburgh, Cardiovascular Behavioral Medicine, 1986. Internship, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Clinical Psychology, 1984. Ph.D., University of Iowa, Clinical Psychology, 1982. M.A., University of Iowa, Clinical Psychology, 1979. B.A., Oberlin College, Psychology, 1976. Expertise and Research InterestsMy research generally involves examining behavioral and subjective effects of nicotine in humans that may relate to the development and maintenance of tobacco dependence. One broad area of research focuses on individual differences and acute environmental factors that influence tobacco and nicotine self-administration. This area includes the study of nicotine as well as non-nicotine factors, the latter involving non-verbal (i.e. cues) and verbal (i.e. instructions, expectancies) information about the drug content of a substance. A major emphasis here is on sex differences in these factors, where we have found that, relative to men, women are less sensitive to manipulations of nicotine and more sensitive to manipulations of non-nicotine factors. A second area of research focuses on other individual difference factors, including genetics and personality, associated with variability in initial sensitivity to nicotine in nonsmokers. Greater initial sensitivity to drugs may be related to greater risk of becoming drug dependent. A third area concerns whether nicotine or smoking relieves negative affect (e.g. sad mood) in smokers under all conditions or under just some conditions but not others, to determine the breadth of this presumed influence on tobacco dependence. Finally, the newest area of research explores ways to improve short-term evaluations of the efficacy of medications for smoking cessation in humans, to identify drugs that do versus do not warrant more comprehensive study in clinical trials of quitting smokers.
