QualificationsPh.D., University of California, San Francisco, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, 1981. B.A., Harvard University, Biochemical Sciences, 1970. Expertise and Research InterestsThe principal research interest in my lab is neuronal nicotinic receptors. We have pioneered the use of several new radioligands, including [3H]epibatidine, [125I]epibatidine and [125I]A-85380, and have developed a novel quantitative approach using these ligands to measure receptor subtypes with receptor autoradiography and receptor binding. We also measure nicotinic receptor function in vitro by rubidium efflux and neurotransmitter release. We employ these methods to characterize the how chronic nicotine exposure affects expression and function of nicotinic receptor subtypes in rodents. Recent studies have focused on differential responses at differential developmental stages, including nicotine exposure in adolescents and in utero. Furthermore, in collaboration with Dr. Ken Kellar of Georgetown, and Dr. Yousef Tizabi of Howard, we are studying the roles of these subtypes in psychiatric diseases including schizophrenia and depression.
