Provencher received his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University and taught at the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse before arriving at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) where he is associate professor of French and Intercultural Communication and affiliate associate professor of Language, Literacy and Culture. He also completed a UW-System Research Fellowship at the Center for 21st-Century Studies at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee in 2001-02, and was a Visiting Scholar in Residence in the School of Languages and International Studies at Nottingham Trent University (UK) in 2009. He has written on such topics as the French gay press, Jean Genet and his continued influence in 21st-century France, French sexual citizenship and same-sex spaces, teaching masculinity and male citizenship in Third-Republic France, gay beur sexuality in contemporary French cinema, teaching queerness as cultural flexibility in the intercultural classroom, and the NBC sitcom Will and Grace. His work has appeared in French Cultural Studies, Cineaste, Contemporary French Civilization, Contemporary French and Francophone Studies, Speaking in Queer Tongues (Illinois, 2004), The Sitcom Reader (SUNY 2005), and Resilience: Queer Professors from the Working Class (SUNY Forthcoming). With Andrew Sobanet, he co-edited a special issue of Contemporary French Civilization (2007) entitled "France, 1940-1944: The Ambiguous Legacy". His book, "Queer French: Globalization, Language and Sexual Citizenship in France," was published by Ashgate (December 2007). Other ExpertiseHe is currently working on several new projects. These include "Language and Homophobia in France," "Leading New Models of Citizenship and Straightness out of the Closet," "In and Out in the French Banlieue," and "Language and Urban Renewal in Baltimore, Maryland." He is also currently working on a translation of Rachid O.'s novel Chocolat Chaud (1998) and a new book-length project that will examine the issues of homosexuality and Maghrebi cultures in contemporary France. Future ResearchFuture research will also include Québécois Narratives of the Closet and Coming Out. Industrial RelevanceHis research has been funded in part by GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and its Center for the Study of Media and Society. This project discusses the role and responsibility of media executives, television producers, and script writers in the creation of gay and lesbian images on American primetime television.
