Working at Ultralab allowed me to research and develop liberating structures that scaffold self-directed and remote teamwork while delivering a large National School leader community on time and in budget. Transparency, level structures and dialogue allowed us to be innovative, dynamic and hugely ambitious in utilizing the new web technologies to generate delightful learning and participation.

2004-2006 Principal researcher/consultant in future technologies.
- Researching the future use of technology for the BBC (see publications).
- Researched participatory e-democracy with Great Yarmouth Council developing methodologies for citizen participation using SMS messaging to a large screen.
- Researched student participation in school design for the designmyschool.net project with the Design Council.
- Researched the use of mobile game technologies for learning, with the MGBL EU funded, consortium.
- Represented the Technology for Social Action consortium at a variety of events, and collaboratively designed their successful Design for the 21st Century bid.
- Worked with the Enabling technologies group to explore the assistive and empowering use of technology for people with disabilities.
- Wrote a commissioned paper on e-maturity for BECTA,
- Wrote a paper for the Foresight 2030 team
- Consulted on e-learning design with the faculty of Education at Anglia Ruskin University,
- Co-delivered with Stephen Heppell The Information Technology Education Show keynote in Birmingham,
- Delivered the Keynote at the Salford University elearning conference,

2000-2003 Project Leader.
- Led the research and development of the Talking Heads online community for head teachers in advance of National College of School Leadership. This laid the foundations for the £4 million, 4 year NCSL's online communities project, assisting to bring professional communities of practice into the lives of 70,000 English school leaders. Until the successful novation to NCSL - the communities were facilitated by Ultralab's agile, collaborative team of 23 online learning facilitators who empowered members to appropriate web technologies for their own contexts.

1997-1999 Online learning community facilitator.
Researched and developed online learning community methodologies.
- Established OLN, the Online Learning Network for educationalists in advance of the University for Industry (UfI) 1997-1998.
- Co-wrote the successful SMILE bid,(the SME Internet Learning Experience) and facilitated the online community of practice that was funded by EU / ADAPT to examine how engineers in the automotive and aerospace industries can integrate online community methodologies into their supply chains 1998-1999.

Exploring;
- how web based and mobile technologies can be designed to support teams and online communities in their: knowledge sharing, collaborative self-management, self-evaluation, effective resource exchange and accountability.
- how massively multiuser virtual environments can best be designed and utilised to support: dynamic learning, wider participation, mental health, community revitalisation and increase dialogue, skill sharing, collaboration and reflective practice.
- the effective appropriation of web technologies for self- help, participative action research and social action.
