Expertise and Research Interests

- Physiology, anatomy and function of mammalian glial cells
- Ionic and volume homeostasis in brain extracellular space, especially the role of glial cells
- Pathophysiology of anoxic/ischemic injury in CNS white matter
- Intracellular ion homeostasisin glia and neurons
- The role of pH in controlling neural excitability and epileptic discharge
- The mechanisms of action of antiepileptic drugs

Other Expertise

I am a practicing neurologist with special expertise in movement disorders and strokes that affect brain 'white matter'.

Future Research

Current research efforts continue to focus on astrocyte physiology and function. More effort is being devoted to microglial cell function.

Industrial Relevance

My research is highly relevant to drug development for neuroprotection especially to brain white matter. Future studies will explore how brain white matter is damaged by stroke or trauma.
