His research work in this context has examined diverse topics related to economic evaluation of pharmaceuticals, risk adjustment of health outcomes, quality of primary care, medication and patient safety, applied statistical methodology in health services evaluation, and patient-centered outcomes evaluation (specifically focused on patient trust, satisfaction, and medication adherence behavior).
In particular, he has a very strong disease-specific research interest in outcomes evaluation in chronic diseases, and study of outcomes related to controller pharmacotherapy (especially diabetes, psoriasis, and asthma).
Dr. Balkrishnan has published nearly 200 research articles in high profile journals such as Medical Care, Health Services Research, Health Affairs, Lancet, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and has co-authored the definitive text on health services research evaluation published by AcademyHealth / Health Administration Press.
