Current studies are focused on the physiology and biochemistry of the gastric and liver pathogens Helicobacter pylori and Helicobacter hepaticus, respectively. Those components that are important in virulence or for persistence in colonizing the host are studied. These include understanding metal sequestering proteins that store or mobilize metals into metal containing enzymes, enzymes responsible for combating oxidative stress, and the basis for use of molecular hydrogen as an energy source for growth of the pathogens. Approaches used include bacterial physiology and genetics, targeted mutagenesis of genes and specific residues, animal virulence models, and physical spectral approaches on pure proteins.
