Expertise and Research Interests

T lymphocytes recognize foreign and self protein antigens in the form of relatively short peptide fragments associated with proteins encoded by the genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) loci. There are two classes of MHC proteins: T lymphocytes expressing CD8 co-receptor molecules recognize peptide:MHC complexes formed by MHC class I proteins, and T cells expressing CD4 co-receptor molecules commonly recognize peptide: MHC class II complexes. Dr. Rudensky's research is focused on mechanisms of generation of T cell receptor ligands, the complexes of MHC class II molecules and peptides derived from endogenous proteins, exogenous proteins and bacterial pathogens, and their relevance to T cell immunity. Dr. Rudensky is also investigating the role of peptides bound to MHC class II molecules in development of CD4 T cells.
