QualificationsPh.D., Georgetown University, Linguistics, 2002. M.S., Georgetown University, Linguistics, 1993. B.A., University of South Carolina, English (major) and French (minor), 1990. Academic Exchange, University of Hull, British Literature and English Linguistics. Expertise and Research InterestsMy main research interest is written medical discourse. My dissertation was a genre analysis of medical English texts produced for three audiences: physicians, medical students, and patients ("Linguistic and Extratextual Variation in Medical English Writings: A comparative genre analysis" -- UMI Dissertation No. 3077816). Since then, I have continued to conduct research in this area. With Linda Moore, I recently co-authored a study about written text on caring for Alzheimer's dementia patients that was published in "Alzheimer's Talk, Text and Context: Enhancing Communication" (ed. Davis 2005). I have also served as an external reviewer for the National Library of Medicine's Consumer Health Text Readability Project, which seeks new ways to better communicate healthcare information to patients and caregivers. In addition, I have evaluated health information written for patients, such as "The Paths to Progress," a multi-media health education project on blood stem cell transplants produced by the National Marrow Donor Program. I am currently working on a project funded through the Alzheimer's Association in which I serve as lead materials writer, creating pedagogical content-based activities for ESL and low-literacy learners studying to become certified nursing assistants. I also develop curricula and materials for English for Specific Purposes programs at community colleges, including certified nursing assistant and applied electronics courses. Additionally, I design and deliver professional development workshops and on-going specialized training for ESL practitioners, such as the workshop "Here's to Their Health: Health literacy for adult English language learners," and consult on ESL curriculum and materials development initiatives, such as "Health Literacy Lesson Plans for Adult English Language Learners" and "The New South: A civics curriculum for adult English language learners." Other ExpertiseSince completing my postdoctoral fellowship in the Applied Linguistics Program at UNC-Charlotte, I have become a Professional Affiliate Member of the Graduate Faculty. Currently, I am working with the Applied Linguistics Program to establish its English for Specific Purposes certificate track; I am also working with UNC-Charlotte's Center for Writing, Language and Literacy on several health-literacy related initiatives. In the past, I have taught in UNC-Charlotte's College of Education, Department of English and intensive ESL program. I was project manager for a U.S. Department of Education grant awarded to the Applied Linguistics Program to help content-area teachers better recognize and respond to the needs of ESL learners. I also worked on a research grant in the Department of English that helped ESL students better prepare for their content-area writing classes. Additionally, I assisted the TESL program in revising its K-12 Master's-level licensure track and served as an advisor to STELLA, a UNC-Charlotte TESL organization for graduate students.
