Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Clinical Research Division University of Washington School of Medicine Pathology ProfessorAppointed: 1988 | |
QualificationsM.D., Stanford University, 1968. Expertise and Research InterestsAs a pathologist with the Seattle bone marrow transplant team I am interested in human and experimental bone marrow transplantation immunobiology with special reference to graft versus host disease in humans and animals. Graft rejection and transplantation tolerance as reflected in vivo are areas I study in collaboration with colleagues in Transplantation Biology (Drs. Storb, Yunusov, and Kuhr). Cytotoxic lymphocytes subserve a mechanism of tissue damage I am particularly interested in exploring. Epidermal biology with special reference to epidermal stem cells of the parafollicular bulge and the rete ridge are a focus of my hypotheses regarding pathogenesis of graft versus host disease, graft rejection, and autoimmune diseases.
I have also become interested in newer methods of the study of the hematopathology of human bone marrow with multiparameter flow fluorocytometry. Another area of current work is the correlation of marrow histology with magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvic , femoral and vertebral bone marrow for accurate grading of myelofibrosis in humans.
