Qualifications

M.D., McGill University, Medicine, 1989.
B.A., University of California, Berkeley, Biochemistry, 1985.

Expertise and Research Interests

Clinical interests include management of movement disorders, especially Parkinson's disease, dystonia (including treatment with botulinum toxin), and tremor, screening and selecting patients for deep brain stimulation (DBS), managing these patients post-operatively and programming their DBS parameters. Research interests include DBS-related studies, quantitative gait analysis in Parkinson disease, genetic studies in Parkinson disease, and epidemiological studies that involve drugs and neurodegenerative disorders. Teaching activities include training of medical students, residents, and fellows in inpatient and outpatient general neurology, movement disorders, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Other Expertise

- Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in studies of cortical excitability, central motor conduction time, and treatment of mood disorders with rapid rate TMS
- Functional neuroimaging of the dopaminergic nigrostriatal pathway with positron emission tomography (PET)

Future Research

Quantitative gait analysis in patients with Parkinson disease pre- and post-operatively in relation to deep brain brain stimulation
Help develop detailed registry of clinically well characterized patients Parkinson disease patients and DNA bank for genetic studies
Continue epidemiologic studies to explore the relationships between drug exposure and neurodegenerative disorders
