Expertise and Research Interests

My research program is focused in two areas:

1. Psychosocial and psychosexual development, and health-related quality of life of children born with disorders of sexual development (DSD), i.e., intersexuality. Specifically, my lab is involved in: (a) the development of a series of parent and self-report health-related quality of life questionnaires specific to individuals with DSD, and their families; (b) the development of a psychoeducational intervention for families of newborns with DSD; (c) development of a decision aid to assist parents in arriving at well-informed decisions regarding the benefits and risks of reconstructive genital surgery in infants or young children.

2. Studies of the psychosocial aspects of short stature in clinically referred and community samples and the influence of growth hormone therapy on psychosocial adaptation and cognitive function.

Other Expertise

As a pediatric psychologist working in close association with pediatric endocrinologists and other healthcare professionals, I provide psychological services to children and adolescents with endocrine disorders (and their families), and healthy children from the community with problems of psychological adaptation comparable in respects to those observed in the clinic setting.

Examples include:
Counseling of families with a child born with disorders of sex development (DSD)
Assessment and treatment of gender identity disorders of childhood (in physically healthy youths)
Psychosocial evaluations of youths with short stature and associated psychoeducational interventions
Preparation of children for medical procedures
Addressing problems related to nonadherence to medical regimens in endocrine and other medical conditions
