Shah, MD, MPH is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of Value & Comparative Effectiveness and Associate Director for Research at New York University School of Medicine, and Associate Investigator at the Geisinger Center for Health Research. Prior to joining NYU and Geisinger, Dr. Shah graduated from Harvard College, received his MD and MPH degrees from Yale School of Medicine, and completed additional postdoctoral training as a Fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Clinical Scholars Program at UCLA.
Dr. Shah cares for patients at Bellevue Hospital in New York and conducts research that combines information technology and new ways to improve care for vulnerable populations in two settings: the public hospital system of New York City and the rural, aging population of eastern Pennsylvania's Geisinger Health System. He serves on the editorial board of medical journals, has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, has received over 3.5 million dollars in funding as Principal Investigator of Federal, Foundation and Private grants, has mentored dozens of trainees, teaches at NYU and Geisinger, and serves as a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine's Evidence-based Medicine Task Force. In 2007, Dr. Shah was selected as one of fifteen national recipients of the RWJ Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Award, and in 2009 was elected to Fellowship in the American College of Physicians and the New York Academy of Medicine.
As a researcher, Dr. Shah's primary expertise relates to comparative effectiveness and evidence-based medicine. He is currently the Principal Investigator of three AHRQ-funded studies in Comparative Effectiveness. The first is a randomized controlled trial leveraging an EHR platform to improve rates of prophylactic aspirin use, comparing an interactive clinical decision support tool to a paper printout for enhancing shared decision-making. A second study is a comparative effectiveness study of the long-term use of ACE Inhibitors vs. Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs) using retrospective data from the Geisinger Clinic. A final AHRQ-funded R01 study is a comparative effectiveness study of ACE Inhibitors vs. other medications for African American patients, once again using retrospective data from EHRs, in the New York city municipal hospital system.
