Expertise and Research InterestsTwo of the largest projects currently on-going in my laboratory are 1) Development of complex metal hydrides for hydrogen storage and 2) Suspension ironmaking technology with greatly reduced energy consumption and CO2 emission.
Developed a process for producing fine intermetallic and alloy nano-powders by the vapor-phase reduction of the volatile compounds of the constituent elements. Currently applying this process for synthesizing (1) nanosized composite powder of tungsten carbide and cobalt and (2) nanosized/nanostructured metal-hydride hydrogen-storage materials.
Another process that I have developed is a patented novel solvent extraction process in which the liquid-liquid emulsion is formed by bottom-gas injection, rather than by mechanical agitation. The process is simple, yet efficient and the apparatus, which is basically a simple cylindrical vessel, has no mechanically moving parts.
My major expertise is in the fields of the kinetics and thermodynamics of fluid solid reaction engineering and chemical and metallurgical process design. I have applied this expertise to various industrial inorganic materials production and processing. Notable examples are the flash reaction processes including the flash smelting of sulfide minerals and the flash reduction of oxides. This work includes the development of a 3-D computer simulation model.

The chemical vapor synthesis process mentioned above is close to industrial application for producing powders of aluminides and other nono-sized intermetallic compounds. Examples are Wc-Co composite nanopowder and various hydrogen storage materials.
2. The Suspension Ironmaking Process I am working on has a potential to drastically change the steel industry in terms of significant reduction in energy consumption (~ 38% lower) and CO2 emission (~ 60-90% lower) accompanying the ironmaking step.
