Other ExpertisePell's ongoing research focuses on the relationship between technological innovation, advanced life support, human factors research, and aesthetic practices. Pell has extended experience in the visual and performing arts developing new choreographies and expertise in developing multimedia platforms, by converging audio visual new media and traditional arts medias and commercially relevant industry regulation equipment, technologies and science protocols. Her previous dissertation, Aquabatics as new works of Live Art, explored aqueous philosophies and issues around the human performance experience underwater through practical and theoretical examinations of the diving body producing innovative live art performance laboratories, prototype life support and pneumatic technologies, operational protocols and manuals for the practice of Aquabatics in accordance with Australian and UK ADAS/ HSE Occupational Diver Standards, various lectures, new media exhibitions and publications. Future ResearchSub Culture: Exploring Weightless Environment Training (WET) and Digitally Real Immersive (DRI) Space Architectures to extend understanding of Human Performance Behaviour in these Environments. My intention is to investigate the possibility of extending weightless environment training (WET) architectures in light of pre-existing architectural protocols developed for use in space, current developments in contemporary performance and digitally real immersive (DRI) technologies. While my current posting as a Adjunct Lecturer, at the School of Anatomy & Human Biology, The University of Western Australia consolidates three years of collaborative association with SymbioticA: a pioneering art & science laboratory located within the school, and allows me to explore art and science collaboration and the critical new paradigms opened by the research nexus, my specific postdoctoral work will produce a report of recommendation for further research and a CD-ROM that will be concerned with the experimentation and treatment of new material and operational architectures of blended technological performance environments created for real bodies in real time and WET and DRI space through International Postdoctoral Research linkages with body-technology labs in the UK and advanced life/neutral bouyancy labs in the US. By focusing on adaptive strategies and human-mechanico interfaces, linking traditional bio telemetry and psychological assessments, with human performance and dance communication, relay, and bio extension principals, my intention is to explore innovative systems support for use in long duration extreme environment habitat laboratories and expeditions. In my own labs, I am interested in developing interactive methodologies for the use of new technologies in performance contexts that foster social and perceptual approaches to mixed-environment design or, as I call them, habitats, to write on new possibilities for being and make recommendations for optimum, in situ site-specific performance. What happens when bio technologies - standard, modified and adaptable - that track the temporal dynamics and behavioural processes of people alive, in action towards new understandings of the variations in human time/space/place-specific response, are used in performance labs and the viewer, the supervisor, the standby, the support crews and production teams becomes part of an artwork? How are the aesthetics and protocols of operation, care, observation and communication in WET and DRI performance space cogent on utilitarian performance actuators and how are these factors identified, choreographed and orchestrated? Furthermore, what architectures and technologies arise from this? Industrial RelevanceThe aim of Pell's research is to critique and extend the human condition through the physical and psychological limits of the body and aesthetics of care operations and life support in extreme environments with new technologies, choreographies and protocols. By documenting how the body adapts to perform in extreme environment habitat situations, new technologies and bio-psycho data with predictive validity for longer durational subspace habitability will result (unhindered by the challenges and limitations of remote ocean operations for example). This research contributes widely to life support system development and understanding: from health care to the defence and military, information and surveillance systems, the mechanisms of public and private institutions, and the design and technology of living systems in, and of themselves.
