Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Susan Rawl conducts research in the area of behavioral oncology and cancer control with a special emphasis on colorectal cancer. Her research program is primarily focused on tailored computer-based behavioral interventions to promote cancer screening. Dr. Rawl's studies have been funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Nursing Research to test tailored print and telephone counseling interventions to promote colon cancer screening. Her current randomized trial is testing the efficacy of a clinic-based, tailored interactive computer intervention to promote colon cancer screening among African Americans.

Rawl has completed studies examining quality of life issues related to treatment for colon and rectal cancer and adjustment to living with an ostomy. She has collaboratedy on multisite studies testing the impact of a computerized cancer risk assessment & education program, a computerized symptom assessment system for cancer patients undergoing treatment, and computerized intervention to assist newly diagnosed cancer patients and caregivers with symptom management.

Rawl has published in a variety of multidisciplinary journals including Patient Education and Counseling, Cancer Practice, Journal of Psychosocial Oncology, Oncology Nursing Forum, and Health Education Research. She is active involved in the American Cancer Society, the Oncology Nursing Society, and the Midwest Nursing Research Society. She is a peer reviewer/panel member of the American Cancer Society's Cancer Control & Prevention: Psychosocial and Behavioral Research Review Committee.
